Airport runway lights at night9/9/2023 ![]() ![]() I had never been to this aerodrome during MF hours, and I was unfortunately not aware of the ARCAL-K system in use during those hours. As I got closer to the aerodrome, I noticed only the red threshold lights were lit, which seem odd to me. Following proper MF procedures, I was told runway 27 was recommended, so I'd cross midfield and join a left-downwind. ![]() I took off from the tower, flew to the ARCAL-K ATF without incident, and was able to use the system properly, as I had my first experience with ARCAL on the dual the night before.Īfter taking off again and reaching my set-heading point, I flew to the now-MF. I was aware of this, but I hadn't looked into the change in lighting during MF hours. For the solo, it was 11pm-2am, when the MF was active. On the dual, we flew from about 8-11pm, when the day-tower/night MF was still tower-controlled. I had done the required dual flight yesterday night, and was lucky enough to have good weather to fly solo tonight, cross-country for the first time. The flight was from an always-on tower, to an ARCAL-K lit UNICOM/ATF, then to a day-tower/night-MF, and back to the tower aerodrome. To put perspective on this, I'm an 80-hour PPL with 14 hours night flying, 2.8 dual and now 3.0 solo night cross-country hours. I just got home from doing my first three-leg night solo cross-country, and after reading more of the airport information I made a serious and unsafe mistake.
